Chevrolet Spark – A Spark On The Road

The Chevrolet Spark, manufactured under the Chevrolet brand of General Motors, was launched in 2007. Originally known as Daewoo Matiz, when it was launched in 1998, after the General Motors took control over Daewoo Motors in 2002, the cars were then marketed under the Chevrolet badge. The second generation model was introduced in 2005, with the third generation launched in 2010. A face-lifted version was introduced in 2012.The Spark costs Rs. 3.44 to 3.99 lakh.

The Chevrolet Spark has a smart aerodynamic frame. The twin port grille with Chevy’s signature golden bowtie extends onto the redesigned front bumper and looks good. The clear lens headlamps give a unique identity to the Spark. The conspicuous satin-silver roof rails highlight the compact design and also balance its aerodynamic styling. The tail lamps with chrome finish enhance the overall appeal of the car. The addition of a black panel on the lower portion of the bumper is refreshing. The fog lamps add to the beauty of the exterior and also provide enhanced road visibility which adds to the safety in adverse and low visibility conditions. The newly added rear reflector tail lamps make night driving easy as it can be noticed by other cars on the road from a comfortable distance.

The basic design of the dashboard is a carryover from the original Spark of 2007, but the plastics now showcase a different shade of beige. The interiors are spacious. The rear seats are foldable with seatback shopping hooks. The seat base slopes slightly downwards and this can be quite uncomfortable on long drives. The central console has a digital tachometer, digital trip-meter and digital fuel gauge.

The other safety features present are headlamp leveling device, central-high mount stop lamp, 3-Point ELR seat belts in the front and rear, 2-Point seat belts at the rear middle, collapsible steering column, tubeless tyres, brake booster and child safety locks at rear doors.

The top variants gets power windows on all four doors, power steering, internally adjustable rear-view mirrors, rear defogger and an MP3 CD player with Aux and USB input. However, airbags are not offered even as an option. Chevrolet Spark is available in six colours.

Under the hood, the Chevrolet Spark is equipped with an S-Tec, 995 cc petrol engine that generates 62 bhp @ 5400 rpm and delivers a torque of 90.3 Nm @ 4200 rpm. The 995 cc SOHC LPG engine churns out 62 bhp in petrol mode and 60 bhp in LPG mode and delivers a torque of 90.3 @ 4200 rpm. The engines are mated to 5-speed manual transmission system. In terms of economy, you can expect 12.3 kmpl in the city and 16.9 kmpl out on the highway.
